Abstract

APPLICATION OF NUMERICAL MODELLING AND GEOINFORMATIC SYSTEMS GIS AS SUPPORT TOOLS IN ASSESSMENTS OF MGWB PROTECTION ZONESThe use of advanced geoinformatic systems, especially considering GIS as a pre-processor integrated with numerical models like MODFLOW, is the most effective method in analysis of complex regional groundwater systems. So far investigations carried out for establishing water balance components, groundwater resources and protection zones in several Major Groundwater Basins (MGWBs) have proved that full model control from a GIS platform is necessary to fulfill all these tasks. During the work the method of protection zone evaluation was tested as well combining simplified GIS analysis of average flow time in unsaturated zone with semi-analytical particle tracking MODPATH modelling in saturated zone. The scheme of calculation is based on GIS layers such as DEM and soil moisture together with resultant matrix of effective infiltration being achieved from MODFLOW model.
