Abstract

HYDROLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES OF HARD COAL MINING IN THE AREA OF BOGDANKA (LCB)

Abstract. The mining work has been carried out in the south-western part of the Łęczna-Włodawa Lake District (Lublin Polesie) since 1975. It has caused changes in the ground surface relief and water relations. Mining activities cause shifting of watersheds and changes in the pattern of surface-and ground-waters, including their quality. Four subsidence basins - 2 of them permanently filled with water - and a mine tip of waste rock have formed in the mining area due to caving and a considerable decrease in the pressure of waters in the Jurassic and Carboniferous horizons. The flow directions of shallow-lying groundwater change, mineralization of ground- and surface waters increases and their run-off accelerates. Those quantitative and qualitative changes in the water conditions in the area of the valuable ecosystems of the Polesie National Park pose a serious threat to the environment. In order to protect this part of the Lake District, it is necessary to maintain the water reservoirs in the subsidence basins and to prevent the distribution of the increasingly eutrophic and mineralized waters.
