Abstract

SEISMOSTRATIGRAPHY OF QUATERNARY SEDIMENTS IN THE POLISH PART OF THE BALTIC SEAThe study focuses on seismostratigraphy of Quaternary seabed deposits in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea, as derived from the analysis of seismoacoustic records. The analysis allowed to identify three major units that can be interpreted in the following way. Unit A is made up by glacial and fluvioglacial sediments deposited during the glacial period as well as by older, interglacial formations. Unit B consists of deposits of various origin, formed after the glacier had retreated and the sea transgressed. Unit C is a result of marine sedimentation in progress since the transgression. The major units are further subdivided into subunits, differing in their lithology and genesis. The distribution of the major units is presented on geological profiles and maps. The maps illustrate morphology of the major units, their thickness, and the subunit patterns.
