POSSIBILITIES OF GEOTHERMAL WATERS DEVELOPMENT FROM THE CENOMANIAN AQUIFER OF THE PROSZOWICE-BUSKO-PIŃCZÓW AREA

Abstract. The paper presents a potential possibility of utilization of the geothermal energy resources accumulated in the Cenomanian sandstones of the Proszowice-Busko-Pińczów area. The research connected with oil and gas exploration, carried out at the Department of Fossil Fuels, allowed to reconstruct precisely structural and thickness variability of Cenomanian sandstones in the study area. Moreover, spatial (3D) lithological and petrophysical models of the region were also performed. Basing on such data we took an attempt to analyze the possibilities of geothermal development of the Cenomanian aquifer. Up to date, the Cenomanian waters were utilized for drinking and curative (in Busko Zdrój) purposes. However an analysis of the reservoir properties and petrophysical parameters of the Cenomanian aquifer reveals the possibilities of broader use of geothermal waters. Despite of the low water temperatures in the aquifer in the range of 20-35°C recorded in the study area, the shallow aquifer with favourable reservoir parameters represents a potential source of geothermal energy which can be utilized for heating purposes with application of heat pumps. The chemical composition of Cenomanian geothermal waters reveals also profitable features for balneotherapy.
