Abstract

THE PRESENT-DAY STATE OF GEOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE ON ROCK SALT DEPOSITS IN POLAND

Abstract. The rock salt occurs in Poland in the Upper Permian (Zechstein) and Neogene (Middle Miocene) salt-bearing formations. The Zechstein salt formation is the main object of exploitation. It contains four thick complexes of rock salts and occurs over nearly 2/3 of the territory of Poland. Salt domes are located within the Polish Lowlands; subhorizontal Zechstein rock salt formations are known from both the Sieroszowice region (SW Poland) and Łeba Elevation (northern Poland). The paper provides an analysis of the current state of common rock salt resources in Poland and presents data concerning the balance of reserves and geological conditions of the deposits. A particular attention was paid to the analysis of the areas promising for geological exploration.
