Abstract

POLYCYCLIC AROMA TlC HYDROCARBONS (PAHs) IN ANTROPOGENICALLY ALTERED SOILSAbstract. The contents of 17 PAHs and TOC (total organic carbon) were detennined in soil samples collected near WWA emission sources, i.e. power plants, coking plants, ancient gasworks, exploitation oil drills, refinery, soot and graphite production plants, aluminum and copper smelters, charcoal production factories, and Warszawa-Katowice motorway. The results derived from the present study indicated that a diverse spectrum of PAH in the soils examined depends on the type of pollution sources, and the PAH concentration pattern in processed raw materials. It should be stressed that the analysis of the PAH spectrum can provide a "Fingerprint" of a given PAH pollution sources. The total of PAHs/TOC ratio can be a useful index for assessing the degree of soil pollution.
