Abstract

REGIONAL MULTILAYERD MODEL OF A GROUNDWATER FLOW SYSTEM IN THE CARPATHIANS FLYSCH; EXAMPLE OF THE KRYNICZANKA WATERSHED (MAGURA NAPPE)

Abstract. A three-dimensional model of groundwater consistent with regional trends in isotope research and field hydrogeological observations was elaborated for Kryniczanka watershed (Magura Nappe — Fig.1 ). The most intensive groundwater flow takes place in the shallow zone represented by 1st, 2nd, 3rd layer of the model (up to 100 m below surface). Below this depth the groundwater flow is less active, but the hydraulic head distribution, which is controlled by the surface topography, suggests that the very slow water exchange up to the depth of 1500 m is possible. The model has been used for a deeper regional flow component evaluation that can be identified as disposable resources of the mineral medicinal waters. The Visual MODFLOW model enables to determine the difference in hydraulic heads and flow between the layers. The drainage zone of the deeper regional flow, determined by the model includes all confirmed appearances of mineral waters and medicinal mineral waters. The new developed three-dimensional model is very important to understanding the groundwater flow system and protection of medicinal mineral waters in Krynica watershed.
