Abstract

ANTHROPOGENICAL CHANGES IN THE IONIC COMPOSITION OF FISSURED-KARST FORMATIONS OF THE MIDDLE AND UPPER DEVONIAN AQUIFER IN THE ŚWIĘTOKRZYSKIE MOUNTAINS

Abstract. The paper contains an estimation of the chemical composition of fissure-karst waters in limestones of the Middle and Upper Devonian in the Świętokrzyskie Mts. and the influence of imposed anthropogenic contamination. The estimation was carried out on the basis of research and monitoring results from the region. In 1999 out of 30 studied sampling sites, with characteristic water types for climatic conditions in Poland were observed in 17 sampling sites. In 7 sites there were waters of type HCO3–Ca, while in 10 sites waters of type HCO3–Ca–Mg were encountered. The remaining sites were anthropogenically contaminated waters of type HCO3–SO4–Ca, HCO3–SO4–Ca–Mg, HCO3–Cl–Ca–Mg, HCO3–Cl–SO4–Ca and HCO3–SO4–NO3–Ca. The ionic composition of water in the region of the Świętokrzyskie Mts. show evident variability. A decidedly greater number of sites in which the water type is decided by the magnesium ion (Mg2+) are found in the northern and eastern parts. Sites with SO42- ion originating mainly from atmospheric contamination in the region of the Kielce agglomeration of cement — lime industries dominate in the eastern part. The occurrence of the Cl- and NO3- ions are indicated at certain sites and don’t reflect a regional contamination source but reflect a local contamination source.
