Abstract

EVALUATION OF THE HYDROGEOLOGICAL PARAMETERS OF UPPER JURASSIC LIMESTONES ON THE BASE OF WATER LEVEL RECOVERY IN “ZAKRZÓWEK” QUARRY IN CRACOW

Abstract. The “Zakrzówek” quarry is located in the southwestern suburb of Cracow, about 600–900 m to the east of the Vistula riverbed. Exploitation of the Upper Jurassic limestone reached 60 m down below the terrain surface and 30 m below the static water level. Flooding process was started in 1992 after the mine abandoning. Systematic monitoring of water level in the quarry allowed estimating the hydrogeological parameters of the Upper Jurassic aquifer. That estimation was based on the analogy between an open-pit and a well. Several alternative methods were used to find the hydraulic conductivity coefficient of the Upper Jurassic limestones. The parameter value based on Theis assumption was 1.96 x 10-6 m/s. Obvious differences between real site measurements and Theis theoretical model convinced the authors to apply the original non-linear method to water level recovery curve. Regression coefficient of real site measurement points to theoretical model achieved value 0.96 in this method. The hydraulic coefficient value reached 1.24 x 10-5 m/s and it was higher then in Theis method. Results achieved in non-linear estimation method were similar to results based on approximated time of the Vistula water inflow to the quarry (2.44 x 10-5 m/s). These results were corresponding with the average value of the hydraulic coefficient of the Upper Jurassic limestone in the Cracow region — 9.96 x 10-6 m/s.
