Abstract

RESULTS OF A HYDROGEOLOGICAL STUDY OF PALEOZOIC ROCKS AND BITUMINOUS SYMPTOMS IN GOCZAŁKOWICE IG 1 BOREHOLE (UPPER SILESIAN COAL BASIN)

Abstract. The Goczałkowice IG 1 borehole with the total depth of 3353.5 m has been drilled in the western part of the Carpathian Foredeep in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. The aim of the drilling was to recognize the deep structure of the Upper Silesian depression and its hydrogeological environment as well as to verify the of hypothesis about the occurrence of hydrocarbon deposits in rocks of the Upper Carboniferous basement. The investigations of the rock matrix of the Lower Carboniferous, Devonian, Cambrian and Precambrian reservoir rocks showed generally its low open porosity (1.25% on average) and permeability (less than 0.1 mD on average). The formation waters in the Paleozoic deposits are highly mineralized thermal brines of Cl–Na–Ca hydrochemical type with a high iodide and bromide content. They are relict waters altered as a result of hydrogeological environment diagenesis. Direct investigations porformed in the borehole did not demonstrate free gas and oil occurrence in the reservoir rocks.
