Abstract

GEO-ENVIRONMENTAL MAPS OF TRANSBORDER AREAS AS A TOOL OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND GEOLOGICAL HERITAGE PROTECTION

Abstract. Development of geo-environmental maps of trans border areas should be one of the significant form of activity in bilateral cooperation between Poland and Ukraine. Such maps accompanied by a guiding text contain the complex information about the geology, mineral resources and economic aspects of deposits, nature-cultural values of the described area, nature protection forms, as well as about anthropopression sources and the character of environmental hazard. They could be used as a tool helping the sustainable management of the environment and space (land use planning), particularly in contributing to the more effective protection of regional-scale natural heritage. The paper is dedicated to a concept of such maps and shows the preliminary results of the research performed in 2006-2007 in the Polish-Ukrainian transborder area located between Lubaczów-Radymno (Poland) and Rava Ruska-Ivano-Frankove (Ukraine). They were related to the mineral resources potential assessment, which seems to be one of the most important elements of the environment.
