Abstract

DISTRIBUTION OF THE PROGNOSTIC AND PERSPECTIVE RESOURCES OF BUILDING CERAMICS RAW MATERIALS IN POLAND

Abstract. Over a hundred of prognostic areas and 280 perspective areas of building ceramics raw materials have been indicated in Poland. Of fundamental importance are Quaternary deposits (ice-dammed lake clays) and Neogene deposits (so-called Poznań Clays and Krakowiec Clays), which covers more than 80% of the current output. Triassic and Jurassic clays are of less importance, and other clay deposits are highly insignificant. However, the prognostic resources (like the economic reserves) are very unevenly distributed throughout the country, and clay deposits are very diverse in terms of their quality. Evaluation of the prognostic resources (as well as prospecting for new deposits) should be performed mostly in northern and northeastern Poland, where a deficit of building ceramics raw materials occurs. In the other regions, any prospecting should focus on the highest quality clays.Amore detailed recognition should be performed also in those areas where preliminary exploration was previously carried out. Insufficient resources of many prognostic deposits can be a hurdle for development of building ceramics. New deposits should have the reserves of at least 1 million m3 .
