Abstract

FACTORS CONTROLLING CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF GROUNDWATER AT THE RESEARCH STATIONS IN WARSAW AND RADOSTOWO

Abstract. The research was conducted at the research station in Warsaw (central Poland) and Radostowo (northern Poland). Groundwater of Quaternary, Miocene and Oligocene aquifers, collected from piezometers and wells, was examined during a 17-years period of 1991–2007. In Warsaw, the chemical composition of groundwater changes with depth. The shallowest water samples are of HCO3–Cl–(SO4)–Ca–(Na) types, whereas the deepest ones are represented by HCO3–Cl–Na–Ca types. In Radostowo, the vertical distribution of hydrogeochemical type of groundwater was constant: HCO3–Ca–(Mg). The difference in groundwater recharge within the Major Groundwater Basin and the diversification of hydrogeochemical processes are the major factors controlling the chemical composition of water.
