THE ROLE OF THE UPPER RESERVOIR OF THE ESP ŻARNOWIEC PUMPED-STORAGE POWER PLANT IN THE FORMATION OF SCALE AND EXTENT OF GROUNDWATER LEVEL CHANGES

Abstract. The ESP Żarnowiec Pumped-Storage Power Plant uses the Żarnowieckie Lake as a Bottom Reservoir, while the artificial Upper Reservoir with an area of 135 ha, was built between 1974 to 1983. The aim of the research was to determine the effect of changes in water levels in Upper Reservoir on groundwater levels in the useful aquifer.Aclear correlation between amount of water in the reservoir and the groundwater level elevation can be marked in the daily and hourly observations. The range of amplitudes of groundwater level changes strongly decreases with the distance from the reservoir. Measurements carried out at monthly intervals, indicating the seasonal changes in groundwater levels, cannot be the basis for a reliable assessment of statistical correlation and thus a clear evaluation of the scale and extent of impact on groundwater of the analyzed object.
