Abstract

THE STUDY OF GROUNDWATER CONTAMINATION BY ORGANIC CHLORINE COMPOUNDS ON THE EXAMPLE OF INTAKES IN BORNE SULINOWO AND NOWA DĘBA

Abstract. Large-scale studies on the content of tri-(TCE) and tetrachloroethene (PCE) in groundwater that is used as drinking water supplies, have been conducted in Poland since 2008. As a result, TCE and PCE have been detected in numerous locations including water intakes in Borne Sulinowo and Nowa Dęba. This paper describes model tests on the example of the water intake in Borne Sulinowo, with use of an inverse task and parameters auto-adjustment methods in order to estimate local groundwater flow directions under the conditions of insufficient hydrogeological reconnaissance. The methods enabled reliable reconstruction of hydrogeological conditions as well as defining relations between potential contamination sources and contaminated water intakes. Additionally, the lost cone drilling method used for groundwater sampling is presented on the example of field work conducted in the area of Nowa Dęba water intake. The above-mentioned method significantly reduces costs and time related to field work, particularly in the areas where the aquifer is unconfined and has a homogeneous structure. The authors hope that this paper will trigger off the discussion on the methods of dealing with tri- and tetrachloroethene contamination in Poland.
