Abstract

THE INFLUENCE OF AGRICULTURAL DRAINAGE SYSTEMS ON GROUNDWATER QUALITY AN EXAMPLE OF THE TURSKO B WELL FIELDAbstract. In the recharge area of the Tursko B well field supplying water to the town of Pleszew, the contamination plume that flows towards the wells has been evidenced. The intensive groundwater contamination is caused by infiltration of surface water from ameliorative channels, which receive water from agricultural drainage systems as well as treated wastewater from the Goluchow sewage treatment plant. Hydrochemical research shows that drainage water is heavily polluted as a result of agricultural activities. It is reflected particularly by high concentration of nitrates. Their impact on groundwater is the most intense during the spring, when drainage systems transport considerable amounts of water. Treated wastewater from the Goluchow sewage treatment plant is characterized by very high concentrations of almost all dissolved components, but the most hazardous to the groundwater are periodically very high concentrations of ammonium and nitrate. The presented research shows the necessity of rebuilding the channel in order to reduce the amount of infiltrating wastewater.
