Abstract

IDENTIFICATION OF WETLANDS IN THE MIDDLE-POLISH LOWLANDS BY USING REMOTE SENSING METHODS

Abstract. Marshes and swamps often provide a habitat for the development of ecosystems of recognized natural value. One of the universal indicators of wetland areas is vegetation. Based on plant communities, in the selected region of Middle-Polish Lowlands, an attempt of using aerial photos and satellite images was made to distinguish and identify woodless marsh and swamp areas. Orthophotomaps with natural colour from aerial images and Landsat TM satellite images were used in this study. Based on the photo interpretation and the NDV1 ratio, transient peatlands that developed in the process of lake overgrowing, areas covered with shallow layer of water with a typical occurrence of common rushes, as well as swamp and marsh areas with meadow vegetation have been distinguished. Size of these areas, natural value of their phytocoenosis and tendencies in spatial variation have also been estimated.
