Abstract

ASSESSMENT OF GROUNDWATER NITRATES POLLUTION ON THE BASIS OF GROUNDWATER CHEMICAL STATUS MONITORING DATA

Abstract. Assessment of groundwater nitrate pollution required data gathered within groundwater chemical status monitoring 2008–2011. The data were analyzed according to the Nitrates Directive (91/676/EWG) and European Commission requirements. We analyzed mean and maximum values of nitrates compounds from the four-year period of time, the assessment was conducted in the aspect of the whole territory of Poland and zones vulnerable to nitrate pollution (NVZ). In the aspect of the whole territory of Poland data analysis showed that in all monitoring points the biggest percentage of mean and maximum values of nitrates concentrations are values lower than 25mgNO3/l. The least vulnerable to nitrates pollution are confined aquifers. In the aspect of NVZ zones data analysis showed that the biggest percentage of monitoring points, characterized by mean and maximum values of nitrates concentrations exceeding 50 mgNO3/l, are capturing shallow groundwater (0–5 meters). The analysis of monitoring points characterized by mean and maximum values of nitrates concentrations exceeding 50 mgNO3/l showed that most of them capture groundwater at maximum depth of 20 meters. Alteration tendency of mean and maximum values of nitrates concentrations analysis showed that shallow groundwater (0–5 m) are most vulnerable to nitrates pollution.
