Abstract

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF SURFACE WATERS IN THE VICINITY OF A FLOTATION TAILINGS STORAGE SITE FOR “TRZEBIONKA” ZINC AND LEAD ORE MINE IN THE CLOSING DOWN PHASE

Abstract. The paper presents selected aspects of the closure and reclamation of a flotation tailings storage site in the context of protecting the soil and water environment from the adverse effects of polluted rainwater and leachate. It discusses the local geological and hydrogeological conditions within the sedimentation pond of the currently closed down ZG “Trzebionka SA” in relation to the possibility of rainwater and leachate seepage into groundwater. The paper provides information on practical solutions regarding the drainage of excess water from the area of the storage site and discusses the possibility of supplying water for biological reclaim in dry periods. The data come from a project of reclaiming ZG “Trzebionka” flotation tailings storage site carried out by the authors. The paper also presents updated results of water quality assessment in draining ditches and surface water courses in the vicinity of the storage site and a preliminary assessment of the changes in chemical composition of leachate following the closure of the storage site.
