Abstract

THE USE OF GROUNDWATER MODELLING IN THE ASSESSMENT OF WATER ABSTRACTION IN THE AREA BETWEEN THE DUNAJEC AND BIAŁA RIVERS

Abstract. The drinking water for the Tarnów city is supplied mainly by the intakes located near the Dunajec River, which exploit groundwater from the Quaternary aquifer as well as the infiltrating river water. The Quaternary aquifer is vulnerable to pollution from the surface due to the shallow groundwater level and the lack of effective natural isolation. The main sources of groundwater pollution are industrial and urban areas. A one-layer flow model was constructed for present groundwater flow conditions in the area between Dunajec and Biała rivers using the Processing Modflow program. The modeled area covers 20 km2. The calibrated flow model was next used to simulate the prognosis of groundwater extraction. Analysis of these solutions indicates a high possibility of water abstraction in the area, taking into account the prospective demand for water.
