Abstract

THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF SURFACE WATERS IN THE WA£BRZYCH BASIN TWENTY YEARS AFTER LIQUIDATION OF COAL MINES

Abstract. Negative influence of mining activities in the former Lower Silesia Coal Basin remained even after the end of mining. This article presents results of research whose main aim was to evaluate the quality parameters of water in the area exposed to strong anthropopressure as a result of coal mining in the Walbrzych Basin. This region was undergoing environmental transformation for hundreds of years. The results of this long-lasting mining activity are permanent and can be easily seen. Today, twenty years after liquidation of the last coal mine, negative influence of mining facilities (mine waste disposal, sediment ponds of mining waters, outflows from inundated pits) can be still noticeable, which is confirmed by the research.
