Abstract

PEATLANDS OF LUBARTÓW UPLAND AS THE POTENTIAL NATURAL GEOLOGICAL BARRIERS

Abstract. The evaluation of three peatlands of Lubartów Upland (A,Band C) as the potential natural geological barriers was presented in this study. In the evaluation of isolating properties of studied peatlands both physic-chemical parameters and geological structure were taken into consideration. The following parameters were considered as the most important criteria of isolating properties: thickness and continuity of peat layer, lithology and subsoil, the type of peat, organic matter content, pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), permeability coefficient and variability within the peatland area. The peatland C showed the best potential for having isolating properties. The deposits found in this peatland showed both highest values of cation exchange capacity and the lowest permeability. Moreover the variability of those parameters in the peatland C is the lowest in comparison to peatland A and B.
