WATER FILTRATION AND SLOPE STABILITY IS AS THE PRIME PARAMETERS OF FLOOD BANKS

Abstract. Since the millennium flooding, which happened in Odra basin in 1997, intensive modernization of flood banks has been carried out. The catastrophic flood in 1997, called the flood of the century, had the greatest range. Many different types of sealing materials are used during modernization of the flood banks of Odra River. This article shows the effectiveness of flood banks modernization with the usage of bentomat which is produced by CETCO Poland. This problem has been described on the basis of filtration and stability calculations of the flood banks body localized on left bank of Odra River in Lubuskie voivodship. The described section is located along 528,6–532,0 km of the course of the river. In calculations two cases were taken into consideration: (a) flood bank without filtration barrier and (b) flood bank sealed with bentomat. The calculations showed that the usage of waterproof screens made of bentonite mats can reduce filtration by 99%.
