Abstract

ENGINEERING-GEOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF TYPICAL SOILS IN POLAND

Abstract. In this paper the results (characteristics) of tests carried out mainly in the laboratory of the Geological Faculty (Warsaw University) on the basic genetic types of soils known from the territory of Poland were reviewed. They have been divided into Paleogene-Neogene (Oligocene, Miocene and Pliocene clays) and Quaternary (glacial, fluvial, glaciolacustrine, eolian, marine and organic soils). The characteristics reflect the most common features of soils crucial for assessing their suitability as a foundation subsoil. It has been emphasized that, for today, the data base is insufficient for providing, for example, the average or derived values together with their variability for the distinguished soil groups. This paper is also an appeal to other laboratories for expanding and supplement their own data bases. Most likely a regional approach will be necessary for establishing characteristic parameters for the individual soil groups.
