Abstract

PERSPECTS FOR GELOGICAL STORAGE OF CO2 WITH ENHANCED COAL BED METHANE RECOVERY IN THE UPPER SILESIAN COAL BASIN

Abstract. This paper presents a preliminary study of CO2 storage possibility in deep, unexploited coal seams of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin along with enhanced coal bed methane recovery (ECBM). The first task was to compile a list of criteria that must be met by perspective storage locations including among others protection of coal deposits and their availability for future exploitation. Regional analysis, which focused mainly on methane content of the coal seams located at the depths between 1000-2000 m, implies that favourable conditions for location of CO2 storage are present primarily in the central-southern part of the USCB. In this area coal seams of the Upper Silesian Sandstone Series and Mudstone Series, which are located far from active mines at depths exceeding 1250-1300 m, hold most promise for CO2 storage. Preliminary assessment of CO2 storage capacity was performed in the Pawłowice-Mizerów case study area. A static structural-parametric model of the Upper Silesian Sandstone Series coal seams has been created for thai area. Storage capacity for those coal seams is estimated at 8.3 Mt.
