Abstract

DYNAMICS OF THE SHALLOW GROUNDWATER RETENTION IN THE HYDROGEOLOGICAL UNITSAbstract. The paper presents a method to assess the variability of the shallow groundwater retention which allows for the determination of the long term variability of the accessible groundwater resources. The long term (1951–2007) data from the shallow groundwater monitoring was analysed. This monitoring is run by the Polish Geological Institute and the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management. The investigation of the shallow groundwater retention dynamics was used to identify the cyclic occurrence of dry years with low renewability of groundwater resources as compared to the long term average. This enabled to determine so called guaranteed groundwater resources accessible for the development.
