Abstract

THE MINERAL SECURITY OF POLAND WITHIN THE EU AND IN THE WORLD

Abstract. The EU lias serious problems in ensuring its minerals security. This is the consequence of a dearth of certain key mineral deposits, the need of meeting the demand for some minerals by importing them from politically or economically unstable countries and the difficulty of accessing known but as yet unexploited deposits. It is therefore important to ensure a stable access to mineral resources and to maintain a stable flow of imports. This aim can be achieved by diversifying EU's mineral import sources and adopting "mineral diplomacy", i.e. establishing good relations with countries with rich mineral deposits, allowing commercial exchange or joint exploitation, with participation of European, including Polish, companies. Poland holds a significant share of EU's mineral resources: some of its deposits (coal, sulphur, copper) are critical for EU's mineral security.
