Abstract

THE POSSIBILITY OF USING SOME BALANCE MODELS INCLUDED IN EUROHARP PROJECT FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF NITRATE LOSSES IN POLAND

Abstract. The EUROHARP project (Towards European Harmonized Procedures for Quantification of Nutrient Losses from Diffuse Source) aimed at providing results of nutrient losses (nitrogen, phosphorus) from diffuse sources (agricultural land) to surface water. The project was executed in 2001–2006. Within the EUROHARP, different methodologies (quantification tools) for estimating nutrient looses were tested in European catchments. Quantification of nutrient looses is necessary for the Nitrates Directive and the Water Framework Directive implementation, especially for Nitrate Vulnerable Zone delimitation. EUROHARP includes nine different methodologies which have been applied in 17 study catchments from 8 European countries. The summarized description of select balance models, which could be used for nitrate leaching are presented. The paper shows modelling results from the catchments with Polish agricultural and hydrological conditions similar to those in Poland.
