Abstract

REGIONAL MODELLING OF NITRATES TRANSPORT IN A CARPATHIAN RIVER WATERSHEDAbstract. A numeric regional model of nitrate transport in groundwater was developed for the Raba river watershed, about 1537 km2, which is a Carpathian tributary of the Vistula River. The model was prepared to predict groundwater quality changes in the watershed. For the spatial variability interpolation of present-day nitrate concentrations in groundwater an inverse distance method was used. Variability of spatial distribution of nitrates injected to the soil from agricultural pressure and countryside areas was made on the basis of simplified balance of nitrogen loads input. The ranges of areas with this types of land cover activities is based on a numeric map of land cover activities according to CORINE. Spatial distribution of nitrates injection to soil from atmospheric wet deposition was also performed. Prediction results point at a systematically worsening groundwater quality in the Raba river watershed. It refers to the increase of nitrate concentrations and increasing areas with groundwater concentrations over 50 mg NO3/l.
