Abstract

IDENTIFICATION OF PROCESSES OF FORMING GROUNDWATERS CHEMISTRY OF THE BIAŁY STREAM CATCHMENT (WESTERN TATRA) USING GEOCHEMICAL MODELSAbstract. The results of research conducted in the catchment of the Biały Stream, located south of Zakopane within sedimentary series of the Tatra Mountains, were presented in this paper. The monitoring of physicochemical properties and the ionic composition of rainwater and groundwater was carried out in the years 2003-2009 in the mentioned area. The collected data were used to build numerical models in the program PHREEQC with phreeq.dat as thermodynamic database. The results of the modelling allowed the identification of processes controlling the groundwater chemistry of the polygon. The groundwater chemistry of the Biały Stream catchment was formed mainly by the processes occurring in the aquifer. The participation of evaporation arid the substances brought with rainwater did not exceed 15%. Among the reactions occurring in the aquifer the most important factor was the dissolution of carbonates (mainly dolomite) in the presence of carbon dioxide. Definitely smaller was aluminosilicate dissolution and dissolution of gypsum and salt.
