Abstract

ASSESMENT OF WATER INTAKE POSSIBILITY FROM QUATERNARY AQUIFER IN THE JELENIA GÓRA BASIN REGIONAbstract. Possibilities of building a large groundwater intake in the Sudetes are limited to the areas of Upper Cretaceous rocks occurrence and to the water-bearing structures as buried valleys. Jelenia Góra Basin, located in Western Sudetes, belongs to morphological depressions formed in bedrock composed mainly by granites and filled by thin (rarely exceeding 20 m) of Quaternary deposits. Groundwaters occur in fractured hard rocks of basement and sandy-gravel sediments of main rivers valleys. The highest water-bearing deposits, up to 20 m thick, are noticed in buried valley of the Bóbr River in the vicinity of Jeżów Sudecki, located north-east to Jelenia Góra Basin. Groundwater resources of Quaternary aquifer, based on numerical modelling, are sufficient to supply the Jelenia Góra Basin inhabitants. However, this approach would require more than 70% of their amount. Therefore, the better sollution is construction of groundwater intake consisting of three concentrated in a small place, few wells intakes with discharge ofv2000-3500 m3/d, that will cover about 50% of water demand. Another 50% is possible to have using small 1-2 wells intakes with small discharge.
