Abstract

APPLICATION OF SCANNING MICROSCOPY AND INSTRUMENTAL NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS FOR PIGMENTS IDENTIFICATION FROM CHRZEST CHRYSTUSA (OBJAWIENIA PAÑSKIEGO) ICON PAINTING

Abstract. The main aim of this work is petrological and chemical analysis of mineral pigments from the Chrzest Chrystusa (Objawienia Pańskiego) icon, collected at the Orthodox Art Department at the Castle Museum in Łańcut. Samples of mineral pigments, grounds and lead white were taken for the chemical analysis. The samples were analysed by optical microscopy, SEM-EDS and INAA (instrumental neutron activation analysis) in order to determine the stratigraphy of the art work and the identification of the used pigments.
