THE EFFECT OF ORGANO-SILICIC IMPREGNATION OF VERTICAL FACING SLAB SANDSTONES ON THEIR RESISTANCE TO FORCES PULUNG OUT CONSTRUCTION DOWELS

Abstract. Sandstones are materials often used in ventilated stone faęades. In such constructions, dowels are fixed to the wall. Their stainless steel bars join stone slabs. The slabs are exposed to dynamic load resulting from wind pressure effects, therefore the stone should posses, among others, resistance to the forces pulling out the bolls. This parameter is determined by the standard PN-EN 13364:2002 and its value may be increased by impregnating the stone with proper polymer preparations that change its strength. The sandstones collected from 19 deposits in Poland were subjected to strengthening with org ana-silicic compounds. The samples were saturated by immersing in the impregnate, and seasoned for four weeks to reach the full effect. As the next step, the resistance of the samples to the force pulling out the bolts was determined. The results indicate that the breaking load of the sandstones after impregnation measured at the dowel-bolt hole increased to a various degree. The effect of strengthening induced by impregnation has not been recorded only in a few samples. The tests point to the possibility of structural strengthening of building stories with polymers. The method may be recommended particularly for highly porous and weakly cohesive sandstones.
