Abstract

NONSULFIDE ZINC DEPOSITS IN THE SILESIA-CRACOW DISTRICT

Abstract. The discoveries of large nonsulfide zinc deposits and development of new technologies of zinc recovery resulted in renewed interest in the calamine ores worldwide. In Poland such ores have been exploited for centuries, but in 1990s the exploitation ceased, and probably they will have not economic importance in the future. The nonsulfide zinc ores are connected with supergene zone of sulphide ores. So called “red galmei” were commonly distributed on the outcrops of Ore-bearing Dolomite in the belt Trzebinia–Krzeszowice–Olkusz–
Siewierz, near Tarnowskie Góry and in Bytom and Chrzanów troughs. Uncommon, white galmei were known mainly from Matylda mine near Chrzanów. The differences in mineralogical, chemical, stable isotope H–O compositions, crystallization temperatures were indicated and their forms and the weathering time determined.
