Abstract

CHANGES IN THE CONCENTRATION OF SULPHATES AND IRON IN THE VERTICAL SECTION OF MINE WASTE PILE IN LUDWIKOWICE KŁODZKIE (THE MIDDLE SUDETES)Abstract. A mine waste pile located close to the abandoned “Wacław” coal mine shaft in Ludwikowice Kłodzkie village in the Nowa Ruda mining region, generates acid mine drainage (AMD). At the foot of the tailings pile, acid water (pH close to 2) with a high concentration of sulphates and iron has been observed. Preliminary results of hydrogeochemical investigations revealed high concentrations of total Fe3+ (0.04–9,500 mg/L) and SO4 2– (2,860–38,000 mg/L) in waters seeping through waste tailings.
