Abstract

History of the Mineralogical Museum of the University of Wrocław and the oldest mineral specimens in its collection.
A b s t r a c t. Mineralogical Museum in Wrocław was founded in 1811 by Karl von Raumer who became the first
principal of the institution. Before 1945, a collection of several specimens increased to 13,470. Unfortunately, part of the collections along with inventory books were destroyed during World War II and many specimens were lost forever. The object of my research is both the history of the MM and oldest part of the collection, gathered between 1811 and 1855. Currently, there are about 400 minerals collected during that period. Most of them came from European countries and were donated by museum directors and famous collectors. They deserve attention because all the specimens were collected before the creation of the IMA (International Mineralogical Association) and they include very rare minerals.
