Abstract

FIRST FINDINGS OF CARNOSAURIA FOOT PRINTS IN LOWER JURASSIC DEPOSITS FROM GLINIANY LAS QUARRY, THE HOLY CROSS MOUNTAINS

Summary
The exploration of the Gliniany Las quarry during 1988 and 1989 supplied first theropod footprints which belong to ichnogenus Grallator (Grallator) and new one belong to Grallator (Eubrontes), this specimen is the first carnosaur footprint discovered in the Gliniany Las deposits (Przysucha Ore-bearing Formation, Upper Hettangian). Suborder Theropoda Marsh 1881; Ichnofamily Grallatoridae Lull 1904; Ichnogenus Grallator (Eubrontes) Olson § Galton 1984; Grallator (Eubrontes) sp. (Fig. 2). Material. Original specimen owned by author, plaster cast 1560.11.19 in the Museum of the State Geological Institute in Warsaw. Slab with three natural casts of single footprints: Grallator (Eubrontes) sp., Moyenisauropus sp., (?) Grallator (Grallator) sp. (two digit imprints). Discription. The pes length is 25,5 cm., the distance between the tips of digits II and IV is 18 cm. The distance between the tip of digit III and the line connecting the tips of digits II and IV is 49% of the distance between tips of digits II and IV. Angles between the axes of digits: II-III=23°; Ill-IV =22°. Absence of hallux and interdigital webs. Remarks. The numeration of the digits and the measurements used to characterize the footprint are based on Gierliński, Potemska (2). Discussion. This track differs from other known ichnites from Gliniany Las. It is different from Moyenisauropus by having a smaller divarication of digits with a longer third digit. Also, it differs from Grallator (Grallator) by having more divaricated digits the third digit protruding less above the line connecting digits II and IV and by a larger size. The cartesian diagram (Fig 2) confirms the footprint's appurtenance to Grallator (Eubrontes) occurred in the Hettangian of Lestho, South Africa (1). Among Jurassic theropods, Grallator (Eubrontes) structure placement and length of digits is most similar to pes of Dilophosaurus. On the basis of footprints found during the last 6 years at Gliniany Las I can judge that carnosaurs were the last numerous group among the dinosaurs in the Gliniany Las lagoon deposits.
