Abstract

87SR/86SR STRATIGRAPHY OF MARINE DEPOSITS

Summary
Strontium isotope stratigraphy (SIS) has been developing since 1948, when Wickman suggested for the first time the possibility to use the decay of radioactive rubidium-87 to radiogenic strontium-87 for dating marine sedimentary rocks. Only quite recently, the method reached the level of accuracy necessary for effective stratigraphy. This article covers the basics of SIS, as well as provides important hints for selecting samples and interpreting the results. Since SIS has not been used in Poland yet, it is urgent to introduce this useful method in geological research on Polish rocks. The analytical equipment needed for isotope measurements has just become available at Geochronology Laboratory, Institute of Geological Sciences, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warszawa
