Abstract

CONCEPTS AND REALITY OF THE STRATIGRAPHIC CLASSIFICATION

Summary
The intention to compile a new edition of the Polish principles of stratigraphic classification, terminology and nomenclature makes it desirable to reevaluate the currently accepted classification system. The concept of this system is consistent with the proposals of the IUGS International Subcommission on Stratigraphic Classification, questioned by numerous European stratigraphers. The opposition was especially strong and convincing in the case of the concept of chronostratigraphy. Thus, it would be desirable if this category of stratigraphic classification is treated in the new Polish principles at least with some reservation.
It should be also noted that the introduction of the category of lithostratigraphic classification appeared advantageous for Polish stratigraphy. Formations became the basic units in regional classification and the practice of differentiation of stages may nowadays easily get free of excessive lithological influences. It would be also justified to introduce some new classification categories to the Polish principles. This is especially the case of lithodemic and allostratigraphic units.
