FROM SLIPPING TEXTURES TO STRESS PATTERNS: A REVIEW OF METHODS

Summary
In modern structural geology two graphic procedures, the movement planes method (9, 1) and the method of right dihedra (7), and several computational methods (2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19) have been developed, which allow reconstructions of stress fields from orientations of minor fault planes and of slickenside lineations. The applicability of individual methods (in particular the graphic ones), their constraints and advantages are discussed and also some practical instructions are given as to the appropriate ways of data collection in the field.
