CRETACEOUS CLAYS FROM WĄWAŁ AND KOMPRACHCICE AND THEIR APPLICABILITY FOR PRODUCTION OF CONSTRUCTION CERAMIC MATERIALS

Summary
Infravalanginian silts from Wąwał, the area of Tomaszów Mazowiecki, and Turonian clays from Komprachcice near Opole have been studied. Analysis of granulometric composition (Table 1) and DTA (Figs. 1-2) of sediments samples and of their particular fractions, as well as X-ray-structural analysis of their fraction below 2 μm (Fig. 3) have shown that the sediments consist mainly of beidelite, quartz and calcite, and some subordinate amounts of muscovite, pyrite and gypsum. Ceramic tests have shown that these raw materials have a low melting point, high plasticity and high drying shrinkability (Table 1). Figure 4 illustrates physical properties of the ceramic material kilned at temperatures 850°-1100° C from sandy clay silts from Wądół; Figure 5 shows corresponding properties of the product obtained from Komprachcice clays. These raw material can only be used for production of porous ceramic materials.
