Abstract

EARLY DIAGENETIC STRUCTURES IN OXFORDIAN CALCAREOUS DEPOSITS Summary Calcareous structures (Fig. 1) occurring in Oxfordian carbonate deposits of Poland are described. In accordance with the views of researches from the Federal Republic of Germany (3, 6), the structures are interpreted as by-products of decay of organic matter on sea floor. The process of formation of sponge mummies (Fig. 4) and calcareous encrustations (Figs. 2-4) is discussed. The structures are shown to originate at the eogenetic stage. It is proposed to call all the calcareous structures originating in result of decay of organic matter (i.e. mummies, calcareous encrustations and tuberoids) as putroids.
