Abstract
Stratigraphic division of North-Sudetic Zechstein in the light of facial investigations
Abstract
A lithological description is given of the north-sudetic and fore-sudetic Zechstein series, based on rich material from boreholes and the writer's field observations. On this evidence an analysis is made of the facial-palaeogeographical conditions of the Upper Permian formations, and the tentative stratigraphic divisions of the Lower Silesian Zechstein, thus far attempted, are discussed. Four incomplete sedimentary cycles may be differentiated in the Lower Silesian Zechstein. A detailed stratigraphic division of the Zechstein will be more reliably based on lithology than on any of the faunal remains available. Clay- and limestone-dolomite series, the stratigraphic succession of beds and, subordinately, the Zechstein fauna, consitute the best correlation markers for the distinguished litho-stratigraphic zones. Against the opinion of earlier authors who stated that the Zechstein north-sudetic syncline constituted a bay opening to the NW, the present writer attempts to demonstrate that during the Upper Permian, this area, together with the so called fore-sudetic block, was the southern littoral part of the Zechstein sea. During the Zechstein this sea transgreded three times from the fore-sudetic area towards the south.
