Abstract

Structure of the Orava Basin in the light of selected geophysical data The analysis of the gravity and geoelectrical data from the Orava Basin confirmed that its structure is controlled by a system of normal faults. 2-D and 3-D gravity modelling shows the presence of faults and/or fault zones with the amplitude of several hundred meters. Some oblique faults cause sigmoidal displacement of fault lines surrounding the Orava Basin. The structural pattern of the basin suggests that a local change of transpression regime, caused by the uplift of the Carpathian arc, was responsible for the formation of a local “releasing bend” structure and of the Orava depression.
