Convolute structures may show patterns identical with those produced by instability in density stratification in fluids, provided that the layers involved in deformation are structurally homogeneous in a statistical sense. Non-penetrative discontinuities on the other hand may, if present, control the deformation and determine the pattern of convolute structures.
