Abstract

Granulometric and litho-petrographic characteristic of boulder Clay from the Wilkowska Valley in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains

The paper presents results of field and laboratory studies of postglacial formations found in the Wilkowska Valley near the Ciekoty village (Fig. 1) in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains (Central Poland). The vertical profils of these formations displays a horizon of boulder pavement and three horizons of boulder clay (Fig. 2—4). The present study gives their detailed characteristics (Fig. 5—8) (sedimentary structures, results of granulometric analysis, pétrographic composition of pebbles and gravels, content of heavy and argillaceous minerals, results of chemical analyses) and points to their diversified characteristics connected with different conditions of smelting material from ice and diverse processes active throughout the accumulation period. In connection with the chronology of Pleistocene in the Świętokrzyskie Mts. region, presented by Lindner (1977), formation of glacial deposits in the Wilkowska Valley should be attributed to a few phases (inclusive of the maximum phase) of the Kraków maximum glaciation stage.
