Abstract

A horizon with Inoceramus in the Inoceramian Beds of the Piątkowa structural elevation (Polish Carpathians, Skole Nappe)

In the Polish Eastern Carpathians (Skale nappe) another five localities (Tarnawka I and II, Słonne, Sielnica, Sufczyna) with fragments of Inoceramus shells have been found (fig. 1). Aid the determinable specimens (figs. 2, 3) belong in the species Inoceramus salisburgensis Fugg. et Kast., whose stratigraphic range comprises the Upper Campanian — Lower Maestrichtian (Plates I and II). None of the specimens seems to have been redeiposited. The localities with Inoceramus occupy a similar stratigraphie position in the profile of the Inoceramian Beds, i.e. about 650 m bellow the top of beds (fig. 4). Tarnawka II was the only locality whose position in the profile failed to be univocally determined. It has been assumed on the available evidence that the occurrence of Inoceramus in the stratigraphically defined horizon of the Inoceramian beds (manly shales and thin-bedded sandstones with intercalations of fucoid marls) is not fortuitous. lit seems that only in certain time intervals the conditions in the Carpathian flysch basin were particularly favourable to the development of these pellecypods. The presence of the described fauna in the lower part of the profile testifies to the Campaniam-Maestrichtian age of the Inoceramian beds in the investigated area of the Skole nappe.
