Abstract

Terminology of the morphological elements of the post-Palaeozoic ostracode valve, in the Polish language Constantly increasing interest of Polish paleontologists in fossil and recent ostracodes, resulting in an increasing number of publications concerning these microorganisms, abundantly occurring in Cambrian through Holocene sediments in Poland, caused a need of elaboration of the terminology of their morphological elements. Such elaboration is even more necessary because the Polish terminology used so far is highly inconsequent and incomplete. Lack of unified terminology in this field — particularly now when scanning electron microscope has revealed so many so far unknown morphological details of ostracode carapace — leads to more and more complicated and ambiguous descriptions. The Polish terminology of the morphological elements of the Post-Palaeozoic ostracode carapace here proposed is based mainly on the commonly used English and American terminology which seems to be most comprehensive, particularly so in question of the valve ornamentation. Thus English counterparts of the Polish terms are given in parentheses aside the Polish ones. Only most useful and most controversial terms have been chosen concerning the ostracode carapace morphology as it was impossible to put all of the terms introduced so far. Many terms of the world literature refer to definite genera and even to some species only as e. g. the Zodiacal names used for some definitely situated ornamentation spines within a definite ostracode genus. In the light of some inconsequency in foreign terminology the authors have ordered it for the needs of Polish paleontologists. Some more or less modified drawings derived from general literature mentioned in the references accompany the proposed terminology.
