Abstract

Pleistocene stratigraphy of Poland from the floristical point of view The author attempted for the first time in 1928 to base the stratigraphy of the Pleistocene in Poland on fossil plants. Known at that time in Poland were only 37 localities containing plant remains of glacial or interglacial age. Later, many new localities were discovered, so that at present no less than 266 stations with analogous fossil floras are known to exist in Poland. This is probably the most abundant concentration of this kind in Central Europe. Considering the richness and completeness of most of these finds, it must be admitted that the results arrived at by scientific investigations based on such vast material are hitherto comparatively insignificant. The most important reason for this fact is, in the author’s opinion, the insufficient development of Pleistocene stratigraphy not only in Poland, but also in other European countries.
