Abstract

Jan Jonston’s (1603–1675) views on the renewability of minerals and natural resources.A b s t r a c t. 2023 marks 420 years since the birth of Jan Jonston (1603–1675), a physician, naturalist, historian, philosopher, philologist, educator and translator, speaking 12 languages. The article recalls some elements of his achievements in the field of earth sciences. The importance of the division and classification of minerals proposed by Jonston was emphasized. Particular attention was paid to Jonston’s belief regarding resources such as minerals or raw rock materials. Jonston, like most researchers and scientists of his time, believed that such resources regenerate naturally, in the same place from which they were obtained, and relatively quickly.
